Has Come Up Missing

Things have been going kind of crazy in the studio. While there are many things being worked on certainly seems as though Bryan has come up missing. There are going to be some great images that will be available I assure you in the near future. In this story I am going to talk about the Advance Swimmer piece that I am currently working as well as the "Not Tonight " piece that has been on the easel for quite some time, (sorry Chuck).

"Cliff Divers and Cave Dwellers" - Rightfully named as is the direct reflection of the lure of the breathtaking landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. Travelers and explorers alike venture onto the rocky cliffscapes, (I just made that word up!), of Oregon and Washington. There are times when the cliffs and caves of those areas do get the best of tourists and even more experienced cave explorers. The Coast Guard have made it their intention to be highly qualified in sending in rescue teams into these areas to bring out people that may have become injured or ae just plain old stranded. "Cliff Divers and Cave Dwellers" is meant to highlight the accomplishment of not only transcending this training but using it and seeing the helicopter rescue team accomplishing some amazing rescues in circumstances that are nothing less than harrowing. The interesting part about the image is that it will be again from a perspective that no camera could have ever taken you to. The image will be available in a L/E Print at a special price.

"Not Tonight: The Creole Belle" - I feel that I need to comment on this project as it has been on the table for quite some time that the timeline for completion has been mired by other extraneous project in the recent past. It will come to fruition but not quite sure where it fits in yet. The project highlights some of the daring rescues made by the crew at CGAS Cape Cod. So for those of you that have inquired about it, hang in there! The piece covers the rescue of the crew of the Creole Belle, a commercial fishing trawler that had become disabled in 10 foot seas. The rescue required the deployment of a rescue swimmer to hoist the survivors back to the 60. This again will be available in a limited edition print.

So in short the artist is not exactly missing but has been on somewhat of a hiatus due to an increasing number of varying projects but also to family issues that needed attention. In the near future you can expect more great images and products from BryanSnuffer.com. I would like to draw your attention to the Cliff Divers story page to see the ongoing coverage of the creation of the project. I will show pics and VidCasts so that you can see how Bryan works. Other pieces that are off the military beaten path a project entitled "CIO", another motorcycle culture creature will be available come the midsummer. We will have more on this project as it comes to fruition. The project will be bear photos from a shoot with the owner of a Harley Road King that will be the primary model for this project. This will be a very interesting story image as well. This project will bear prints in as L/E print for an organization involved in the Muskegon Bike Time.

Seclusion

I have had the habit lately of taking in a lot of Podcasts. While I am hearing a lot of thoughts from other people that are into some of the same things that I am in to I realize that I do seclude myself while I am engrossed in a project.

By seclusion I mean clamping off the unwanted influences of other artists, photographers and controlling ideas of others that will cause my work to go in a certain direction. My painting styles and ideas are not friendly to other schools of thought and often times I get folks wandering into my ring to offer, what they think as a friendly critique on my work. Or they throwing out their ideas on where they would go with something. Believe me folks I will tune that out faster than a bad song on the radio. I do not want nor do I believe that one artist would do or say anything to "help" another. We want to purvey our own version of "the fantasy".

With that said, I will move on to say that the images that I create regardless of the genre are images that I enjoy and I do enjoy the work that I do. I will not walk away from anything and say that was too much work. The seclusion that I seek on the current project "Cliff Divers and Cave Dwellers" is to offer a unique view but to also take military art to a level that has not been done in contemporary times. You will just have to see what I mean as I release more images and VidCasts on the project. I lot of the images you can see on the article page for this project but I would suggest subscribing to the thoughts and coverage on my rss feed.

"Project M" - This is a new entry under the collections tab at the top will take us to a genre that I will return to in the near future with a title "M" the latest project that keeps thoughts from Bryan Snuffer. So you have seen the link in the menu and are wondering what this is. "M" is a comic strip that I am playing around with. I like to draw and mess around with ideas that I think my children are experiencing in life. The fun stuff of being a kid and I want to roll up all the aspects of my children into a character that is an eccentric. Only in the fact that M or Emer as he called is by himself a lot. The strip will be revealed on the web only and only here. The strip may only be three panels long at first or as I have time to give it. I am looking forward to showing it off.

Cliff Divers and Cave Dwellers

Going on to another piece that I am working on right now in the studio. I just had to laugh to myself. I rarely get the chance to work lately because of all the extraneous things that are going on right now. Though I do not want to detract from the importance of life, I still very much chomp at the bit quite a bit and when I get the chance to get to a project I go after it, a lot of times, with blinders on to what is happening around me.

I like to tell you a little bit about what is happening with Cliff Divers and Cave Dwellers. A project that visits the genre of advance swimmer school in the Pacific Northwest. A swimmer lands on a one of the many rocky outcroppings in the surf outside of the cliffs of Astoria, Washington. The danger that is involved in this type of rescue at sea is why it takes a special school to get these folks ready for their commission. The project will reach back into my super hero comic book days that I came from and draft into being, much like Dad's Dream, portayed in its extreme viewpoint that offered a "no camera" view. This meant that there could have been no camera view that was in existence for this image. This makes the view and the image completely original and truly a memorable event in art history. Drawings that pertain to the project will be posted here. Stay tuned...

Star Wars Poster Sand Trooper

In a new series of videos and rss feeds I would like to show you the projects that I am approaching in the Star Wars Market. A series of poster projects that cover a certain range of trooper subject matters. They are very thematic and this one as seen above is no different. It shows off the Sandtrooper but all of the reasons why, perhaps, that the garrison is stationed on Tatooine to begin with.

To find the droids that were deployed to Tatooine to deliver to Obi Wan Kenobi that plans for the original Death Star so that it might be destroyed in the end by Rebel forces.

I remember seeing Star wars Episode IV in the summer of 1977. I was 11 years old and I remember whom I had seen it with and exactly how I felt on the drive home. That this was exactly what I want to do for a living when I get older. Well I am somewhat close in that I love what I am doing and that I get to create out my imagination as well.

While the sketch is still in its infancy and I will probably go right to paint and add things in as I go along since I am convinced of the layout. There will be movies and more from the project as it moves along.

With Brayden almost done (this weekend), I will be turning my attention on several more pieces for this spring. While I am grossly behind in the military market for now I find myself visiting some other genres for a while. An occasional portrait will definitely be finding their way into my schedule along with some motorcycle pieces to fuel my upcoming web site MotorWorx Fine Arts. I will have more on that in the near future. Have a great weekend! Bryan

Midget and the Gull Shoal

At 3:00 AM on 18 August 1899, Surfman Rasmus S. Midgett of the Gull Shoal (NC) Station, set out on horseback to make the regular south patrol. When he reached a point about three-fourths of a mile from the station he discovered buckets, barrels, boxes, and other articles coming ashore. This indicated to him that there was a wreck somewhere in the neighborhood. The surf was sweeping clear across the narrow bank of sand that separated the ocean from Pamlico Sound. At times it reached to the saddle girths of his horse. The night was so intensely dark that he could scarcely tell where he was going, nevertheless, he knew that the patrol must be made at all hazards. The rapidly multiplying evidences of disaster urged him on. When he had traveled a little more than 2 miles farther he thought he detected the sound of voices. He paused to listen and caught the outcries of the shipwrecked men. He could see nothing of them or of the wreck, but dismounting and proceeding toward the edge of the bank he soon made out a part of a vessel, with the forms of several persons crouching upon it, about a hundred yards distant. The vessel was Captain Benjamin E. Springsteen’s barkentine, Priscilla, which had run aground.<br><br>
Here was a dilemma that called for the exercise of sound judgment and faultless courage. Midgett had consumed an hour and a half on his patrol before reaching the place. To return to the station and bring back the life-saving crew was to sacrifice three hours more when every moment was precious. On the other hand, to undertake to save the lives of the shipwrecked men without aid was perhaps to throw away his own life and leave them utterly helpless until another patrol should be attempted. By then all might perish. Short time was spent in deliberation. He determined to do what he could alone and without delay.<br><br>
Selecting the first opportunity when a receding wave permitted, he ran down as close to the wreck as he could and shouted instructions for the men to jump overboard, one at a time, as the surf ran back, and that he would take care of them. Then retreating from the in rushing breakers to the higher part of the bank, he watched his chance to approach the wreck again, calling for one man to jump. Obeying his instructions a sailor would leap overboard. Midgett, in each instance, would seize him and drag him from the pursuing waves safely to the bank. In this manner he rescued seven men.<br><br>
During all these laborious exertions he incurred much danger from the chance that he and his burden might be swept out to sea. But now came far greater demands upon his courage and physical powers. There still remained upon the vessel three men so bruised and exhausted that they were unable to do as the others had done. Midgett, however, was not dismayed. To save these he must go right down into the sea close to the wreck, take them off, and carry them to the beach. Down the steep bank into the very jaws of death three times he descended. Each time he dragged away a helpless man and bore him out of the angry waters to safety. The ten lives he saved were the priceless trophies of his valor. Seven of the men were still able to walk. These he sent forward toward the station, while the other three he took to a safe place. After giving his own coat to Captain Springsteen, Midgett rode on to summon the aid of his comrades.<br><br>
Keeper Pugh was on the beach when Midgett came into sight. Upon hearing Midgett’s amazing story, Pugh ordered two of the surfmen to harness horses to their carts and proceed to bring up the disabled men. The other surfmen he directed to set up a stove in the sitting room and prepare for the castaways. It was the end of a splendid day’s work, well worthy of the admiration of the whole people. Midgett, who bore the noblest part, was subsequently awarded a Gold Lifesaving Medal by the Secretary of the Treasury. With the award the Secretary transmitted a highly commendatory letter reciting the story of the brave man’s heroism.<br><br>

"Two Sea III"

I will finish these stories here in the Center Ring. "Two Sea" is an ongoing story that is covering the progress of two projects that take us to sea with the Coast Guard. One takes place in the not too distant past and the other takes us back to more than one hundred years ago when the fledgling Coast Guard was still the U.S. Life-Saving Service. Anyway an update. The project of "Saints in Sou'Westers" is moving along with the finishing of a black and white plate entitled "Seven". "Seven" will be a featured 5x7 print in the collection. The original sketch will remain in my private collection unitl the series is finished. I will provide an update to this story soon showing off the finished product. "Saints in Sou'Westers" will consisit of a group of black and white plates as well as a to yet be determined number of color treatments. "The Keeper" is next on the list of black and white plates and then we ill be starting on "Wave Warriors" the first of the full scale paintings.<br><br>"Not Tonight; The Creole Belle" is also on the easel. This tale takes us above the action of a dangerous rescue at sea by the crew onboard CGAS Cape Cod. A 60 hovers above ten foot seas and below a commercial fishing vessel has become disabled. A swimmer is deployed and he has the job of getting the crewmembers off the boat and into the basket to be hoisted into the Jayhawk. The crew of the 60 do not have long over the site before bingo fuel state. Stay tuned to hear and see more of the story.

Things Are Beginning To Change Part 2

I want to preface this story with the fact that all is still well in the Snuffer household and that as we are growing and changing in our family that the paint is still there. I say these things in order to reassure myself and no one else. So I guess that in all this is an essay to comfort me more than anyone else.<br><br>
As you might know by now that the next painting to be seen here is the Boba Fett piece that is being painted for the Motor City Comic Con. Also as a side note there are some Clonetrooper note cards that are being produced as well. These cards are 6x9 and can be used as a postcard. Anyway that is another story in itself. The Boba Fett piece is coming along, slowly but surely. I see this weekend that it will be coming more into its own with the fleshing out of the cityscape behind him and four imperial figures. (The piece as it stands is seen above. Boba Journal 5). Yes it is true that the SS Maquet aided me in the creation of this piece but we all know that I am a dirty rotten thief anyway so what is the point in keeping secrets.<br><br>
Anyway, back to the way things are still changing. It seems as though I am getting moved out of my studio space so that it may become another bedroom. Who knew???? I will get it back someday but for now I get the pleasure of having the places that I paint change every time that I get to it and actually I am looking forward to that.<br><br>
That is all for now. I will be back next week with another installment of the Boba Journal. All the best, Bryan

"Things Are Beginning to Change"

I had mentioned sometime ago that things are beginning to change around here and I did not elaborate on the subject. I thought that I would do just that in writing a short article on what I meant by that comment.<br><br>
Things are beginning to change in my field feelings towards art and how that impacts my work. It has been in the past that i as an artist would look, like many out there, to others while I draft where I was going on a certain subject. Many pieces that I would come to work were somewhat inspired by other works of art. I am not afraid to admit that art is a farce and artists, in particular are the bravest and boldest forms of liars on the planet. Why? Because would lead you to believe that they are the world's leading authority on the subject at hand. Nothing could be further from the truth. Pablo Picasso once said, "Bad artists borrow, great artists steal". There is nothing new under the sun. All that is left is what is close to your heart as the patron. I do not want the status quo any longer and I do not want to be tied down to a single subject matter. As you have been exploring my site you might start to see that I am venturing into other genres like Star Wars. While <br>
my heart is still very much in tune with military subjects, I want to explore many more as if they were distant lands. Dad's Dream was a exploit of this new philosophy for sure. In that it is a vision or image from some sort of adventure on some remote planet.<br><br>
I will make poignant claims that many military artists will exploit other artists and emulate them in the fashion that they begin to look alike and while they ascend to a higher value given the subject matter, it has become somewhat boring to me, in some ways, to see the same thing over and over again.<br><br>
My work will not again ascend to another's vision and I will emulate nor will I even look at another's work to compare my own. I have to give my audience a fresh view and a fresh subject matter and that is my promise.

MMA Lecture

The Muskegon Museum of Art was a dream yesterday for sure. I had the opportunity to speak before a distinguished group called the "Friends of the Museum". The group meets at the museum at the beginning of every exhibit to get the low down from an expert in the field or a Docent on the works and story behind them. The group met at 10:30 am and I spoke for about an hour on the history of the Air Force Art Program and the various artists that were present there. It was a greta time and I would gladly do it again if I got the opportunity.<br><br>
Although believing that I am suprisingly long winded and my son thinks that I talk wioth my hands a little too much, I think that the talk went very well. I think that the Friends of the Museum got what they came for and some suprising background on the existence of a program that promotes art in the history of the US Air Force.

Dad's Dream

"Dad's Dream" was a lot my idea in the beginning but as I got to know AST2 Charles Ferrante and the folks at CGAS Cape Cod I realized that they needed to be more involvedin the subject matter. Originally a painting fo Cape Cod was going to be a piece on the HH-60J. Chuck suggested that we tackle a swimmer piece. I was intrigued at first while thinking that mnore success would be a in painting of the Jayhawk. As time wore on and we got more into the research part of the project I was completely sold on the idea.<br><br>
In the summer of 06 LTJG Ryan Tickell sent to me a video shot in the main cabin of one of their 60's. It was a video documentary of a rescue of several people from the 40 forty foot swells of the North Atlantic. They were survivors of an impending trajedy that would take the lives of several other passengers of a 45 foot pleasure craft named "Dad's Dream". The boat was reportedly foundering in the icy cold waters approximately 350 miles off the coast of Cape Cad, MA and about 300 miles off the coast of Canadian Nova Scotia. Outside of the range of the small helos, Cape Cod actually deployed several members of their team to a location where it would be easier to launch a helicoptor and be out over the scene and still have a enough time to rescue the passengers of this doomed ship.<br><br>
In the fall, after the release of "The Guardian", I started on a painting that looked more like an action sequence from a comic book. I think that is what makes it such a dynamic image for me is that I returned to those roots a little. You feel like you are right down in the water with the survivor and this is a place that no camera would have dared.

"The Hunt For Malak"

This is definitely a road that I will go down in the future. Malak is hunt ed by Bastilla Shan and his old pal Darth Revan. Revan has turned from the dark side and even though it was because of his reprogramming he still knows where he came from and has made the choice cognitively. Malak defends himself from the Star Forge but will eventually meet his doom there.

Dad's Dream (Un-Art Pt. One)

I have to admit that while I am working on Dad's Dream I am re-entering, in my art, a place that I have not been to in quite some time. I had been re-programmed to think t]like others had in my chosen subject matter and I was blinded to the truth that the work that I am really wanting to do should and will break all the rules. Damn the kingpins for wanting to control all artists from really flying.<br><br>
Artists, or thieves and liars, as I like to all them, are their own worst enemy. Run like hell from any organization where two or more gather in the name of art. No good can come from it. Why you ask? Because artists, can only be out for themselves. It's not a bad thing but it is sure as throwing a hammer into the air and having it come crashing back to earth. Think I am wrong? I challenge to prove otherwise! Bryan
