"SAINTS IN SOU'WESTERS": The U.S. Life-Saving Service
These poor, plain men, dwellers upon the lonely sands ...took their lives in their hands, and, at the most imminent risk, crossed the most tumultuous sea..., and all for what? That others might live to see home and friends.- Annual Report of the Operations of the United States Life-Saving Service, 1885 -from This is a small excerpt from this site, which I think is a great site for information on the subject. I would like to take you back to a time before World War I. A time that reflects the period when the US Life-Saving Service pre-dated the US Coast Guard. Stay tuned for more...
Update December 5, 2007 - As I am working on this project it is turning into a group of projects. Great sketches, drawings and more paintings and studies are coming out of the research for this project. As I am from Muskegon, Michigan and live right next door to Grand Haven, Michigan, (Coast Guard City), I know that both towns are steeped in Life-Saving Service history. While some of my work takes to the coastlines surounding the Cape I know that more it will head right back here in good ole' West Michigan. The Great Lakes area are the largest inland bodies of fresh water in the world and storms and sand bars beach many a craft costing lives and cargo. More drawings soon... |
